Over the past years the Y's Youth and Family Department has significantly expanded its programmatic offerings to include several government-funded programs, mainly through the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). As such, we are currently running two SONYC (Middle School) After School programs, a COMPASS HIGH (High School) After School, and Summer Youth Employment Programs (SYEP) for Younger Youth and Older Youth, all of which require an Education Specialist to support them. As we continue to expand, our commitment to educational excellence, alignment with school objectives, and clarity of programmatic outcomes remain the same. We are therefore looking to hire a Full Time Education Specialist to enhance the Y's educational quality as a whole. While the focus of the position will be on our externally funded programs (mostly DYCD), the Educational Specialist will also interact with the directors of our other youth programs, namely : Youth Hub (funded by New York Presbyterian), Summer Day Camp, fee-for service After School program for Elementary-aged children, Jewish Life Department, Inclusion Programs, Literacy Programs, and others.
The education specialist's primary role is to enhance the quality of the learning our DYCD-funded after school students and SYEP participants go through during their involvement in program. The Educational Specialist acts as decision-maker and consultant in advising Program Directors in their support of front-line staff (Group Leaders, Tutors, Activity Specialists, and Worksite Monitors) in the delivery of skill-based curricula and thematic projects. The Ed. Specialist will also interact regularly with the administrations of the schools where we are providing after school services in order to ensure alignment of goals, educational methods and processes, and offers direct support and training to the aforementioned front-line staff. The role is designed to offer and support program instructional/enrichment goals by ensuring activities align to school and SYEP instructional practices, are structured, age-appropriate, and model effective behavioral management.
