Principal Responsibilities:
Are you someone who thrives on making a difference and has experience teaching skills to enrich the lives of children and adults with special needs? The JCC Greater Boston's Adaptive Special Needs Swim Program is an opportunity for you to transform the lives of people you work with while developing lifelong skills. At JCC Greater Boston, our adaptive swim instructors use previous experience coupled with the Swim Angelfish methodology while receiving lots of team support. The Aquatics Team is a lively and fun group to work with. We are seeking new team members who possess high standards, a strong customer service orientation and great teamwork. This is a part time role and will be for approximately 3-10 hours per week in Newton.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- creates a safe, supportive environment which fosters confidence and skill development
- ensures safety of all swimmers by preventative measures and minimizing hazardous situations
- teaches swimming techniques and water safety skills to students with special needs of all ages using prior experience and the Swim Angelfish curriculum. Establishes individual swim goals, identifies roadblocks, addresses challenges, and helps swimmers meet swim skill benchmarks to assist in water safety, increase leisure skills, and overall swim skills in children. Classes may be individual or group sessions.
- maintains discretion, builds trust and fosters self-confidence; adapts approach as needed to meet unique needs of each swimmer
- provides ongoing, effective communication with supervisor regarding all classes and programming
- maintains class records
- manages equipment used for sessions
- recognize and respond according to protocols in emergency situations
- other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS
- calm, patient, flexible, creative and empathic
- prior experience working with various populations in the adapted space, including children and adults
- loves working with both children and adults helping them achieve their goals
- strong customer service and teamwork orientation
- intermediate swimming skills
- able to use a gentle yet effective approach when working, specifically being able to adjust/be flexible with different personalities, aptitudes and attentional levels
- 21 years of age or older
- high school education or equivalent
- able to attend in person and on-line training (you will be paid for your time)
- can work a flexible schedule + / - 15 hours per week
- JCC Greater Boston requires that new employees be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 at time of hire. The JCC will consider requests for medical or religious exemption that do not pose undue hardship or a direct threat to health or safety.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- able to see, hear and cognitively recognize situations requiring lifeguarding services
- capable of working in a high temperature and high humidity environment for extended periods while wearing required personal protective equipment
- able to make safety related decisions
- read, write, understand and speak English. Able to follow set instructions for swimming program
- frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel
- able to swim at an intermediate level
- may be required to lift up to 30 pounds
- vision requirements include the ability to read routine and technical documents, use a computer, and answer a telephone
- individual will need to demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with community members and coworkers in person, over email and on the phone
