Principal Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Head Swim Team Coach will provide direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for the team members. The position includes organizing the swim team, communication with parents, assisting with conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing student athletes in game strategies and techniques. The Head Swim Team Coach must present an appearance and an image consistent with the LJCC. Must possess mature judgment and sound decision-making.

Minimum Qualifications:

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Supervise swimmers during practices, meets and any other swim periods.
  • Teach proper stroke techniques while coaching.
  • Handles all swim meet preparation, including equipment set-up.
  • Distributes awards.
  • Leads daily practices.
  • Creates line-ups for all swim meets.
  • Assists with the preparation, operation and clean-up of home swim meets.
  • Works with the assistant coaches on time management, practice structure, award distribution procedures, record keeping for swimmers, and overall aptitude for coaching.
  • Works with all coaches on meet set-up, line-ups, creation of workouts, practice development, and awards.
  • Serves as the primary communicator to the Aquatic Director, assistant coaches, parents, and swimmers.
  • Attends and participates in coaches' meetings.
  • Records swimmers' meet results.
  • Coordinates swim meet volunteers for home swim meets.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment.
  • Performs the job in compliance with LJCC policies, procedures, and work rules
  • Reports unusual maintenance problems or irregularities to the Aquatics Director or Building Maintenance. .
  • May need to perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
  • Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the LJCC safety program, with specific attention to safe pool use during swim team periods.
  • Work as a Team Player with co-workers and in conjunction with other departments.



  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be CPR certified or willing to get certified.
  • Minimum one year coaching experience.


  • Competitive swimming.
  • Instruction of amateur swimmers

COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS: Must be able to follow directions and communicate in English verbally.

Must be able to read, write, and understand materials printed in English. Must possess good problem solving skills and have the capability to act rationally and calmly in all situations.

HOURS The hours will vary based on practice and meet times.

General Summary

The LJCC is the only Jewish community center in the state of Alabama, drawing an estimated 10,000 individuals annually of all races, ethnicities, and faiths at all stages of life to our 380,657 sq. foot fitness, aquatics, and education center. 30% of our membership identifies as Jewish while the remaining 70% includes members of all faiths.

Our mission is to offer opportunities for those in the greater Birmingham community to be well--in mind, body, and soul--in an inclusive, safe, and enriching environment. Our traditional fitness services include personal training, fitness classes, and sports leagues. We also provide year-round programming for children and families including high quality preschool through our Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center, summer Camp LJCC for K-8th graders, and youth sports. Special events, like Thursday Family Fun nights at the outdoor pool, a Jewish Food and Culture Fest, and our annual Thanksgiving Day Sam Lapidus Montclair 5k and 10k runs, are open to the public. Partnerships with area organizations enable us to offer direct crisis-relief services, including emergency shelter and food distribution, on an as-needed basis. We are a United Way organization and receive support through the Birmingham Jewish Federation.
