Principal Responsibilities:

The Lead Camp Counselor will report to the Director of Camping Services and is responsible for overseeing an age group of camper's ages 5 thru 13 years, dependent on group assigned. The Unit Leader Assistant's primary responsibilities include maintaining positive relationships with campers and ensuring their needs are met, supervising and guiding camp staff, assisting in the creation and facilitation of camp activities and parent communication. In addition, the Unit Leader Assistant will assist with pre-camp planning.

  • Ability to remain flexible and adapt to changes and needs
  • Demonstrated reasoning skills and ability to make quick and sound judgment calls as well as the ability to resolve conflict with solution oriented approach. Seeks assistance from the Camp Director when appropriate
  • Possess integrity, high ethical standards and ability to maintain poise throughout times of high stress
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
  • Motivation to contribute positively to JCC Shemesh camp at-large community
  • Integrate Jewish values into daily activities to foster an environment of growth, respect, and caring

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend multi-day summer camp training and in-service camp training's and meetings
  • Supervise a camp group ranging from 18 to 24 children (dependent on group assigned; Kinder thru 8th grade)
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities
  • Implement planned activities, written curriculum plans for all open group times throughout summer and assigned weekly schedule
  • Facilitate camp activities such as games, crafts, songs, sports, skits, special events and other camp activities.
  • Supervise children during swim activities; this includes swimming with them, keeping children safe and engaged in the swim/pool activities
  • Lead and supervise children during field trips and adhered to the highest level of safety
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of each child in the group at all times
  • Set up and clean up materials for camp activities
  • Ensure camper participation in activities
  • Get to know all camp staff within the camp group and ensure their success through needed guidance, support and resources ensuring the staff members well-being
  • Review each camper's profile and plan for the camper accordingly
  • Maintain a physical environment (indoors and outdoors) which is safe, attractive, and clean
  • Ensure for the health, safety, and welfare of all campers in any area or programs at camp
  • Maintain regular contact with campers' parent/guardians in person and daily thru Remini app
  • Provide behavior management guidance and intervention for campers as necessary, document and communicate accordingly
  • Act as next level up in camper or staff issues that may arise during the summer. Seek assistance form Unit Leader, Assistant and/or Camp Director as needed
  • Attend assigned overnight trips (Dependent on assigned unit: grades 3rd &4th Tucson overnighter June 18th thru 19th, all camper over nighter July 1st thru 2nd, grades 5th-8th July 9th thru 10th )
  • Create a culture of trust, respect and feedback within the assigned group
  • Oversee Camp Counselors, Inclusion Counselors, and performance while implementing JCC, DHS and ACA compliance standards and best practices
  • Provide staff development through regular performance observations and feedback in areas staff are doing well in and/or can improve, providing praise and encouragement
  • Assist Unit Leaders in feedback/completion in regarding performance evaluations for Camp Counselors & Inclusions Counselors
  • Monitor and ensure staff are abiding by the staff schedule and report if staff are late, absent and if group is over or under staffed
  • Give feedback regarding bunking campers
  • Implement and collect weekly camper evaluations
  • Help facilitate daily snack
  • Help facilitate daily Shuk sales
  • Provide an atmosphere for developing good morale and well-being among all staff
  • Ensure that programs are aligned with the VOSJCC values and provides a culturally rich Jewish based camp experience while promoting a welcoming environment for all
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    WORKING CONDITIONS / LOCATION: Exposed to outdoor weather, extreme heat and health club environment

    COMPENSATION: $12.75 per hour and .25 for every pervious Shemesh Summer worked

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to work in an outside environment, in excessive heat and walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to have the capable of lifting 30 pounds and carry and move tables, chairs, and other program equipment.

  • EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE/ SPECIALIZED TRAINING:

  • At least 18 years of age (under 18 must apply for Jr. Counselor)
  • Commitment and ability to work full 10 weeks of camp (May 26-August 2) and training dates (May 17th-20th)
  • Minimum 1 year professional experience working with youth grades K-12
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (employees responsibility to obtain)
  • Pass TB test (to be paid by JCC)
  • Pass fingerprint clearance (to be paid by JCC)

  • SAFETY: Must practice and promote safety at all times
